The Only Thing that can Defeat Death

The Bible explained that death is very powerful. No one can escape it if it comes. No matter how we live, good or bad, rich or poor, believer or not, when it comes to death, all is equal. They say it is the great equalizer.

Life is like a song, there is a beginning and there is an end.

Like  a song,  it can be out of tuned or it can be pleasing to the ear.

Like a good song, proper notes should be in proper place and everything should be in timing.

Like a song, it can be mellow dramatic, it can be upbeat, it all depends on the composer.

God has given us the right and freedom to compose the song of our lives. Now, it is up to us how we will sing the song. But no matter how beautiful the song will be, it will always come to an end. Death will come, it can be abrupt, it can be silent, it can be bad.

Death happens so that people will know that there is someone up there that is powerful enough to bring an end to our lives. Death happens because God wants us to learn that He is the giver of life and He is also the taker. Death happens because God wants us to realize that this life should be like a good song, dedicated to praise Him and serve Him.

We have learned that after death comes resurrection. It may not happen right away, but we know that it will be the next stage of our lives after we die.

The moment we resurrect for life, then that is the time we will know that we have defeated death. As we all know, there is physical death and there is the second death, which is the everlasting punishment in hell. Paul mentioned this in his letter. 1Co 15:54  So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory.

How can we defeat death and be resurrected to inherit everlasting life?

Many people are afraid to die.

They are afraid because they don’t want to loose what they have, money, love ones, power, honor and luxuries. They have strong attachment on material things, that’s why they don’t want to end their life yet. They are afraid because they don’t know what will happen if they die. Some are still in confusion about the concept of death.

Others are afraid because they know their lives are full of wrong turns.

When it comes to physical death, the Bible explains that everyone is appointed to die once (Hebrews 9:27). We can only live once and die once. This makes our lives precious. Knowing that we only live and die once, we better make sure that we are living it according to the will of the One who gives it.

The Bible also explained that in every rule there is an exemption. This means that not everyone will die physically, because Apostle Paul said that when Jesus Christ returns again, there will be some who are still alive. There will be resurrection of the dead but only those who died for Christ and who have served God will be resurrected first.

Dying physically is not the death that we must be afraid of. Jesus says, “Mat 10:28  And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.”

The second death, mentioned in the book of Revelation is the lake of fire, an everlasting place of punishment and torment (Rev 20:14  And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. )

Even if we can’t escape the physical death, we can defeat second death.

How?

Apostle Paul, before he died confess that he found the secret formula for escaping and defeating the second death, that is by keeping the faith, finishing his course and fighting a good fight.

2Ti 4:6  For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand.
2Ti 4:7  I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith:
2Ti 4:8  Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.

Keeping the faith means walking by faith, living by faith and dying in faith.

Finishing the course means be trustworthy on whatever duties we have received from God. Do not leave it whatever happens to us. Give our best in the service of the Lord God.

And fighting a good fight means don’t let our guards down in all times because the devil won’t stop until he successfully defeat us.

Remember this, when Christ reign, He will put all His enemies under His feet. The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death. (1 Corinthians 15: 25-26)

If love is as greater as death, then our love to God will help us defeat death.

  1. Dear pastor,

Good day to you pastor. I have a question.

A person lived a sinful life and at certain stage in his life, he became very sick and weak. Then he repented of all his sins faithfully and received Jesus Christ as his savior and Lord.

However, because of his illness, he cannot basically serve God by going to church, doing the good works and living a good life that will please God, is it too late for him to have salvation? What shall he do to be saved?

    Thank you in advance pastor.

    God bless,

    Julius

    1. Dear Julius,

Peace be with you and your love ones.

Thank you for your beautiful question. God works on us in amazing ways. If the person in your story repented that much and accepted Christ truly, then it is only God who can approve of His salvation. Though salvation is free for all those who accepted and put faith in Him, then, knowing that person has the inability to do good works and live a good life because of his illness, God will decide upon His salvation.

No one decides who will be saved except God, and since God sees the contents of our hearts, if that person really deserves to be saved, then he shall be saved through God’s grace and mercy.

      God bless bro. Julius.

      1. Dear brother,

        Thank you for your reply!

How do we ask God for forgiveness? How can we know that God will acknowledge our prayer of confession and repentance? Do we have to confess it to pastors, elders of the church or to a fellow believer or just plainly pray alone by myself? Please give me bible reference in this matter.

By the way, I am living in Plaridel Bulacan. I am looking for a church in our place so I can serve God. How can I find IDKH church or group in Plaridel or at least the nearest to our place?

Thank you again & God bless,

        Julius
